Why do people use Magic?

Why do people use magic?

Why do people use magic?  To be clear, I’m not saying you should or shouldn’t use magic.  I’ve heard it said that only the poor and the rich dabble with magic.  Typically the middle class are too busy being lulled to sleep by the island of the lotus that is consumer culture. The poor need power for a leg up and the rich need the power to, at the very least, maintain their lifestyle. Let’s look at the two different ends of the spectrum

The last house on the block

Many people, myself included, don’t come to using magic with eyes of optimism.  Having expended all other options magic is the last chance we have at making a difference in our lives.  It’s a shot in the dark that says, I’ve got nothing to lose because usually we don’t.  Magic is kind of a philosophical Ellis island, welcoming folks with an attitude similar the following quote by Emma Larzarus “Give me your tired, your poor, your huddled masses yearning to breathe free, the wretched refuse of your teeming shore, send these, the homeless, tempest-tossed, to me: I lift my lamp beside the golden door.”

The nicest house on the block

The other end of the magical spectrum would be those who have experienced success.  I’m not going to tell you magic wil make your life all sunshine and puppy dog tails. Life will still show up regardless.  Life on life’s terms is actually why some people still practice magic.  After obtaining success with magic there are several reasons one might still need to magic.
We’ll look at a few reasons why people may want to practice magic moving from benign to malicious.

First off people might want to add a layer of protection or security to their lives, they didn’t work this hard to get there and the best offense is a strong defense.  Secondly, they might want to might want to move up the ladder of life a little bit more.  Next, this is were corruption starts to seep in, they may want to influence others.  Finally, they may wish to intimidate and harm others.

Conclusion

Why do people use magic? In a word power.  Is power a bad thing? No, nothing is inherently “bad”, it really is about the ways in which an individual uses and seeks to obtain it.  Should you use magic?  I’m not here to answer that question one way or another, if it’s right for you, you’ll make that choice on your own volition.
